News: Annual Concerts Report

The Annual Concerts for 2009 took place on Thursday and Friday 19th and 20th March in the Paterson UF Church, Stonehouse.

The concerts were a promotion of the Choir’s new CD which was recorded on Sunday 8th March with all the songs featured on the CD being performed on both nights.

Both concerts were ‘full houses’ and we were delighted to welcome visiting choir members and conductors from Hamilton, Kilmarnock, Lesmahagow, and East Fife and it was particularly pleasing to see Cathy Hamilton, long time accompanist of the choir who retired from playing last year (Cathy donated button-hole flowers for the concerts), and some of our recently retired members continuing to support the choir.

The programme contained a number of new pieces which were all well received and will become regular features in our concert repertoire. The soloists were: Bill Walker, Robert McDermott, Ian Gray, Walter McLaren, and Hugh Grant who also featured playing Bugle Calls on his cornet in the song ‘High On A Hill’ which was one of the most popular items. Our nominated charity for this year is The Yorkhill Childrens Foundation and we have managed to raise £1162.00 for this worthy cause through collections at these concerts, programmes over the two nights and over £400 raised by the ‘Jolly Beggars’.

The choir’s final performance of the season will be at the Lanarkshire Festival Of Male Voice Choirs on Friday 27th March in the Town House in Hamilton where they will perform along with choirs from Glasgow, Hamilton, Lesmahagow, Monklands, and Stirling, where each choir will sing three ‘solo’ pieces and then join together to sing a number of pieces as a massed choir. Our three ‘solo’ pieces will be: The Flower That Shattered The Stone, High On A Hill, and The Girl Of My Best Friend.
